Daniel became a member of the band in 1988. In 1991 was appointed Principal Tuba. He is a graduate of Kalani High School and was a Hawai‘i representative 1981-82 to the McDonald's All American High School Band. He attended the University of Hawai‘i, and recieved a scholorship to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. His primary teachers include: Morris Kainuma, Richard Watson, and Alan Ing. He has also studied with Floyd Cooley, Warren Deck, and former Chicago Symphony Tubist, Arnold Jacobs.
In addition to playing with the Royal Hawaiian Band, he has had the pleasure of performing with the Hawai‘i (Honolulu) Symphony and the Honolulu Symphonic Winds. People that had the most impact on his passion for music are: his parents, Clarence Matsumoto, Steven Hirahara, Richard Lum, and Morris Kainuma .
When not performing with the band, he enjoys teaching private tuba lessons, playing ukulele, guitar, and singing at various wedding events. He enjoys traveling, cooking, and a fine, hand-rolled premium cigar with a nice single malt scotch.
