Born in Minnesota and educated at San Diego State University, he came to Hawai‘i to teach. During his reign as bandmaster, he reinstated the weekly ‘Iolani Palace concerts while adding a new series of concerts on Saturday evenings called the "Twilight Concert Series" and concerts for children called "Music in the Schools."
